Malaysia’s oil and gas production is spread across a few key regions, mainly offshore, including:
1. Offshore Sarawak (East Malaysia)
Sarawak is Malaysia’s largest oil and gas producing region with the majority coming from offshore fields in the South China Sea, including Kasawari Gas Field, Pegaga Gas Field and the Timi Field.
2. Offshore Sabah (East Malaysia)
Sabah also has significant offshore production, especially from deepwater oil and gas fields. This area has seen growing investment in newer offshore projects.
3. Offshore Peninsular Malaysia (Malay Basin)
Located off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the Malay Basin is one of the country’s oldest and most established producing areas, mainly known for natural gas and some oil.
4. Offshore Terengganu and Kelantan Waters
These waters contain several important gas fields that contribute to domestic energy supply, supporting power generation and industrial use.
5. Strait of Malacca (Smaller Fields)
On the west coast, oil and gas production exists but is smaller compared with the east coast and Borneo offshore regions.
